One service we do for clients is remodeling after mold damage. If you have seen a house that has had to go through mold remediation, it can be quite devastating for the family living there.
Possible Causes of Mold
We recently worked on a house that had extensive mold damage and remediation. This particular house had been flipped, and the previous owners had flipped it as well. That meant that the current owners did not know the history of the house or the extent of the mold issue. This house had foundation issues and foundation repairs. Plumbing pipes run through the foundation underneath the concrete, and then come up through the concrete into the house to supply water to your sinks, tubs, and toilets. If your foundation shifts a lot, there is a good chance that some of these pipes will burst. You might not notice this at all unless it’s a significant burst, in which case your water pressure to the rest of the house will be low. But sometimes it’s a smaller leak and goes unnoticed.
Signs of Mold
These homeowners didn’t notice anything until their children developed skin irritation. They went from doctor to doctor without answers or relief until one doctor said that it could be an environmental problem. That’s when they began to look at the house for the source of the irritation. They had their house checked for mold and found that there was extensive mold throughout the entire house! The family had to move out of the house during the remediation process.
Remodeling After Remediation
Now that the mold remediation process is done, we have come in to put the house back together. If you check out our YouTube channel we have a video that walks you through the house and shows you all the remodeling we plan to do. If your house needs extensive remodeling, you might as well take advantage of the opportunity to make the changes you want! For instance, we are going to knock out the wall that runs in front of the kitchen, open up the kitchen area and add an island, giving the kitchen a more modern look.
Making The Home Liveable Again
We want to get the homeowners back into their home, and to do that the home has to be functioning. They need to be able to cook meals, wash the dishes, use the bathroom, and sleep. With that in mind, we are going to attack the side of the house that contains the kitchen, a bathroom, a bedroom, and a living area. By doing this side of the house first we can make it livable for them while we finish the rest. That will give them a nice, new, functional, beautiful, and mold-free living space quickly. Then through the rest of the year, as the finances allow, we will finish out the rest of the house.
More Warning Signs
We hope you never have to go through mold remediation! But if you notice your kids having skin issues, or if you are having skin issues or other unusual health problems; if you notice low water pressure, or if you find that you’re having foundation issues, you might want to think seriously about getting that checked out properly by certified technicians and plumbers.
Before Purchasing a Home
Also, when you move into a new house, make sure you get your inspections done by a third party! Unfortunately, there are disreputable people out there, like there are in every industry. In this case, the real estate agent recommended their own inspector, who did not catch the damage. This should have been caught.
